Lawrence E. Roël, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S. is a board certified ophthalmologist and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, International Society of Refractive Surgery, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons, American Medical Association, South Carolina Medical Society, and the Spartanburg County Medical Society.
Dr. Roël received his undergraduate training at Princeton University (AB), his graduate training at MIT (Ph.D.), and his medical school training at the University Of Pennsylvania (M.D.). His residency training was at Columbia University\'s Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, where he served as chief resident.
Dr. Roel is an accomplished anterior segment surgeon having performed more than 12,000 intraocular procedures including cataract surgeries, implantable contact lenses (ICL), glaucoma procedures and corneal transplants. He has been performing refractive surgery since 1994. LASIK surgery since 1998; and has performed over 3000 procedures including RK, PRK, CK and LASIK.
In addition to his clinical skills; Dr. Roel has pursued various research interest over the years, and has published over 18 peer-reviewed articles on such topics as ascorbate dependent enzymes in ocular tissues, angioid streaks, glycoprotein receptors in embryonic chick muscles, and dopamine mediated regulation of protein synthesis in corpus striatum or rat brain.
Personal interests includes gardening, bird watching, ice hockey and racquet ball.
